These commercial, editorial, and documentary photos (and a behind-the-scenes video at the end of this feature) show the many experiences of what "family" means.
As we head into the holiday season, we're constantly thinking about notions of family, and how today's photographers and brands visualize its diverse meanings and experiences.
This can extend from the traditional models we might expect to ideas about the "chosen families" that enrich our lives.
And, in the words of Luupe photographer Deborah Barak, visualizing family life isn't just about the big events. "It's about the in-between moments, the weird ones, the moments of connection- with all its joy, curiosities, exhaustion, bouts of craziness, and moments of silence."
Below are forty-eight images that capture the many visions of family life in all its joy and nuance.

While Hands made the plunge, Gabe remained at the edge of the pool giggling at his trick. When Hands broke the surface laughing, Gabe jumped in to join her. ▲ "Back in the 1950s and ’60s, more than 4,000 drive-ins operated across the country, but many have disappeared. Now, there are fewer than 400, but the Holiday Drive-In in Reo — the Spencer County throwback with its five screens — marches on. Eric and Sally Reinhart of Caneyville, Ky., watched “Suicide Squad” with Sally’s children — Bryson, 14, Hannah, 10, and Camron Conner, 13 — at the Holiday Drive-In in Reo on Aug. 12, 2016.
